Front door glossary

Entrance doors may consist of several elements, e.g. a moving sash (also referred to as hinged element) and a sidelight (fixed element). The moving sash is the element that has the lock and can be opened and closed.

The space between the individual panes of a multiple glazing is called air gap. Air gaps are usually filled with air or, for example, argon gas.

The surfaces are the visible and touchable elements of an entrance door panel or profile; they can differ in haptics, structure and look. The effect of colours is decisively influenced by the surface structure. The impression that is created by the colour of any object is based on the light that hits the surface. Some rays of light are reflected, others absorbed. Smooth, shiny surfaces create stronger reflections of light than matt, structured surfaces. Metal microparticles create elegantly shimmering looks.

Our products have been designed for a long life-cycle. If you remember the following care instructions, your entrance door will keep its good look even after years of daily use. But please do not stick any labels or foils on the surface, since they might cause damages.
Finishes
adeco door panels are provided with hard-wearing, weatherproof coating materials of various lacquer systems. These are extremely resistant to atmospheric influences and retain their distinguished appearance for years. However, surface soiling due to dust and other airborne substances is unavoidable.
To ensure that you enjoy your entrance door panel for many years to come, we recommend regularly cleaning it with a damp, soft cloth. We recommend using a soft microfibre cloth. When soiled, hard or dry cleaning cloths are used surface scratching is unavoidable.
Cleaning, especially for Renolit-foil finishes, should take place when temperatures are cooler (below 20° Celsius). With Finea, Silvea and Satinea finishes, the temperature of both the surface to be cleaned and the cleaning agent must not exceed maximum 25°C. Refrain from vigorous rubbing when cleaning. Cleaning with a steam-jet degreaser is not permitted.
To remove heavier soiling, try adding a commercially available neutral ph or weak alkaline cleaning agent such as soft soap, Pril or similar to lukewarm water. All cleaning agents must be immediately rinsed with clear water.
Soiling due to grease, oil, soot, adhesive residue etc. can best be removed using aromatic white spirits or isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Test first on a small inconspicuous area. Do not use solvents which contain esters, ketones, high-grade alcohols, aromates, glycol ethers or halogenated hydrocarbons or the like. Do not use abrasive cleaners as these could damage the finish.
Matt stainless steel / Polished stainless steel
Due to its composition, stainless steel does not rust solely through contact with oxygen. Nevertheless, rust film can form on the surface due to environmental conditions (air containing salt and iodine), through contact with ferrous materials or other soiling. These impurities on the stainless steel parts, brought from outside, can be removed with a special stainless steel cleaner.
To protect against surface soiling, it is recommended that you regularly treat the stainless steel components with a commercially available stainless steel cleaner. Under no circumstances should abrasive cleaners or chlorinated cleaning agents be used as these could alter the finish.
Burnished brass
Brass takes on a matt patina over the course of time due to the effects of weather, which is typical for this material. This patina is a natural protection of the metal against external influences. Over time, the material begins to brighten again in areas of use, which accentuates the value of the brass. For cleaning, simply use a damp cloth followed by a dry cloth.
LED Lighting
In order to extend the life cycle of LED lightings, we recommend using them from dusk till daybreak. Especially dark entrance door colours in exposed locations with substantial sun radiation result in higher temperatures of the LEDs, reducing their durability. New LEDs can be ordered from specialist shops.
Walnut – Oak – Jatoba
As a natural product, wood exhibits varying colouration and grains. Due to the effects of weather, wood is subject to an ongoing natural transformation process.
Without regular maintenance, the original wood shade quickly takes on a natural, pale-grey patina. Should the wood surface exhibit cracks, it is conceivable that the wooden slat has moved.
The colour of the wood can be revived using commercially available furniture oils made specifically for outdoor applications. Wood wax products (PNZ Wood Wax L) available in specialist shops also protect wood against greying, without sealing the pores. These products are weather-resistant, water-repellent and environmentally friendly.
For handles which are combined with oiled wood, soil particles can be removed from the wood pores using mild soapy water and a firm brush with natural bristles. Afterwards, furniture oil available from specialist shops may be applied sparingly with a soft brush. After waiting 10 minutes wipe off the excess oil that did not absorb using a lint-free cloth. This treatment should be performed once or twice per year.
Oiling the wood brings out a warm hue, which makes the wood grain more prominent. And rain water beads and rolls off better. In general, the oil treatment brings out the richness of the colour and guarantees the weather-resistance.

The ESC concept
- The elastic sandwich compound for panels installed in exposed positions or coated in dark colours.

Outstanding thermal insulation
The thermal images show impressions of the inside, which means, the higher the surface temperature on the panel, the less thermal loss there is. Looking at the images this means: The more yellow and red (lighter) the surfaces depict, the better the result. The double-sided attachment door panels examined by the infrared camera impress with e.g. very low thermal loss. With many stock entrance doors, temperature differences between room temperature and the surface of the entrance door of up to 8 °C can be observed.

With closed double-sided attachment door panels from the Mattea, Centea and Liseo series, as well as the closed version of Metris and Bruxelles, you achieve maximum thermal insulation. The Vakucor (vacuum core) version does not differ from the conventional attachment door panel in its visual appearance. It is the inner values that are convincing. Upwards of 60 mm door panel thickness we offer this version optionally for closed attachment door panels. With the Vakucor (vacuum core) version, You will achieve U-values of up to 0.18**.

Epoxy resin is a plastic that is created by a reaction of resin and hardener.
Components made from epoxy resin or from glass fibre and epoxy resin are characterised by the following features:
- high dimensional stability
- low thermal conductivity
- good mechanical strength
- high heat resistance
- excellent wear resistance

Frosted glass is produced by the sandblasting or acid etching of clear glass, so that transparent is turned into translucent glass.
A fanlight is a window fixed above the entrance door. It is often used where the entrance area is especially high.
Flush decorative features generally establish an even surface with the panel (as opposed to projecting inlays and decorative features).

An even, smooth finish texture is the result of a particularly high concentration of colour pigments combined with a very fine grain in the raw material. The colour looks dense and saturated in its texture. It is multifaceted and shimmers with subtle nuances. There are many different types of glass affecting the security, thermal insulation and look of the door. Among other types of glass, toughened safety glass (ESG) is availalble for our door panels.
Glasses with low emissivity coatings are characterized by a special coating on the inside of the glass, increasing thermal insulation.

An integrated design is especially important for our Decenta range. Only in this way can we achieve a symbiosis of form, colour, material and function. We think that handles also stand for design. This thinking creates even more possibilities to underline the design language of the entrance door panel. The fixture of handles on the door panel represents design in perfect form and also offers an additional benefit, especially in the case of handles without integrated finger scanners: there is significantly more space between lock and door handle, increasing the freedom of movement when opening and closing the door. A smooth surface, rounded edges: our handles stand for good grips.

Hinges hold the sash of an entrance door in its position and allow it to be opened and closed.

Inlays are small decorative bars made of brushed stainless steel, which are screwed and/or glued into grooves on the door panel.
Projecting inlays:
Inlays are a very special way to accentuate the surface. They create geometric designs with individual, expressive contours. Projecting inlays increase this effect even more.
Flush inlays:
flush inlays do not offer the same expressive look, but are characterised by the fact that they are particularly easy to maintain.
The infill door panel

The door panel is set into the casement frame. The panel is visibly enclosed by the casement profile on both sides. Exquisite finishes maintain the linear composition.

Exceptional insulation due to PU rigid foam core, depending upon profile system between 30 and 48 mm insulation; Double glazing up to 36 mm door panel thickness with 1 low-emissivity coating and argon gas, optional triple glazing with 2 low-emissivity coatings and argon gas upwards of 40 mm door panel thickness. Laminated safety glass is reinforced by a tear-resistant foil. In addition, it considerably reduces the danger of splinters and shards and inreases the sound insulation value.

Ornamental frames are frames made of moulded profiles. They are often used to frame glazed inserts.
The glass pane is mirrored in a way that, during daylight and with the light inside switched off, you can only see through the glass from inside to outside, and not the other way round.
The opening direction describes the direction towards which the door opens: to the left or to the right.

PVC is a special kind of plastic, which is often used for windows and entrance doors.
The design of entrance door panels often shows divisions of the panel into partial areas, which then are given a different look.
By special processes (sandblasting or acid etching), parital areas of the glazing can be turned into translucent glass. This also serves as a protection against prying eyes.

A resistance class (RC) is a classification method to describe the protection an entrance door offers. Our panels are available with RC2 classification, based on the German Industry Norm DIN1637. Our door panels withstand a forced break-in as defined by the RC2 standard.

Stainless steel has a special degree of purity, therefore it is perfectly suited for exterior decorative features for entrance doors or their handles.
A German Industry Norm (DIN) is used to specify the opening direction of doors. Note: the swing direction is where the hinges can actually be seen.

The structural form is made up of the moving part of the entrance door (door sash) and the number of sidelights and/or the fanlight. Today, entrance doors including sidelights or a fanlight have become very popular.
Stop seals provide an improved sealing of the gap between frame and sash profile.

We reduce the risk of glass breakage by using toughenend safety glass (or SPSG) for the inside and outside panes of glass inserts for door panels. It offers increased strength compared with float glass. If toughened glass breaks due to high impact, it will crumble into granular chunks instead of jagged shards. This glazing set-up is standard with our premium products, double-sided attachment panels. If increased protection against burglary is required, we recommend to put a P4A pane in centre position of a triple glazing.
SPSG for your safety
The triple glazing not only insulates against wind and weather. It also insulate the building and reduce energy consumption and thus energy costs.

The Ug value refers to the thermal insulation of the glass. The smaller this value, the better the thermal insulation.

The four fresh wood tones were first used in the PUR series. In combination with black handles and details, the front door gets a modern and at the same time cozy character. But even in the stainless steel version, the natural wood decors impress with their look and feel, which are similar to real wood. They create an inviting and comforting impression of the house entrance. In the adeco design foliation, the grain follows the design of the door, for example the horizontal inlays.
